With aging, the distribution of hair can change. Many men experience increased hair growth on the ears, in the nose, back, or upper arms. Women can also experience hair growth in unwanted places such as the upper lip, chin, underarms, and bikini area. With age, some women also develop increased growth of fine facial hair.
Plucking, shaving, waxing, and electroysis were the only solutions available for hair removal until the advent of the laser. Hair removal lasers target the melanin pigment in the hair follicle during its active growth phase (anagen). Because hair may be in any of its three growth phases at the same time and only the hairs in the active phase are responsive, more than one treatment is required.
The Soprano XL Laser - Super Hair Removal
The “gold standard” laser for hair removal has always been the 810 Diode laser, and now even this has been elevated to a new level. Traditional hair removal lasers work by delivering short burst of intense light energy to the melanin rich follicles. While this is very effective, the 810 Diode laser technology has advanced and can now be used in the super hair removal mode (SHR). This new mode differs dramatically in that, instead of targeting the follicle with short bursts of high energy (which can be uncomfortable), they are heated gradually so treatment is virtually painless. Pulse repetition is very rapid (10 per second): treatment is fast. A man’s back can be treated in about 30 minutes. No chilling is required, and even tanned skin can be treated!
Prior to the treatment, the area must be shaved. The size of the hair bearing area will determine the length of treatment time, but it is normally rapid. Several days following treatment, hairs in the treated area usually “fall out”. Timing of repeat treatment is determined by body area, as hair growth is different in different areas. Typically treatments are spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Sun avoidance, mandatory before and after treatment with all other hair lasers, is not neccessary when using the super hair removal mode.

Meladine Spray
Meladine, an FDA approved preparation is a topical melanin encased liposome in a solution form. When applied to the hair bearing area, it selectively deposits natural melanin directly into the hair follicle resulting in melanin rich follicles to non pigmented hair. This breakthrough allows those blonde, gray, or white hairs to benefit from laser hair removal and is especially appreciated by women with fine, light vellus facial hair.
