The art of tattooing dates back thousands of years. Currently this body art is extremely popular. One in seven young people have a tattoo, and many of them have more than one.
A problem arises though if one grows tired of the tattoo, if a tattooed name is a painful reminder of 'love gone wrong,' or if a tattoo is unacceptable in a new career. About fifty percent of all people with tattoos later want them removed. No acceptable treatment was available until the advent of lasers. The tattoo laser targets the tattoo ink, causing it to fragment into tiny particles that the body then resorbs and eliminates.
The size of the tattoo will determine the length of treatment time. Often a topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment. Following treatment, an antibiotic ointment may be applied and the area covered with a bandage. Sun avoidance of this area is mandatory. Healing is usually uneventful, and fading of the tattoo is gradual. More than one treatment is usually required, and these are spaced six to eight weeks apart.
