The accumulation of unwanted fat can be the result of sedentary lifestyle or diets rich in calories. Sometimes however, we are predisposed to store fat in genetically determined areas. This can be an especially difficult problem as we enter middle age and changing hormones affect fat storage. Many of us despair over the discrepancy between our ideal body image and the reality of the mirror’s reflection.
We diet. We exercise. Yet the stubborn fat deposits still remain. Liposuction used to be the only option, but now there is an alternative. In the late 1980’s Dr. Sergio Maggiori pioneered the method of using injections of phosphatidylcholine (PPC) for fat reduction. Lipodissolve is a combination of pharmaceutical agents which, when injected, dissolve subcutaneous fat. A treatment typically consists of taking measurements and photographs of the area to be treated. This area is then marked at specific intervals and exact amounts of Lipodissolve are injected into these sites. The application of a topical anesthetic cream one hour before treatment minimizes any discomfort. Following treatment, a compression garment is recommended for several days.
Sessions normally take about 30 minutes after which the patient can immediately return to regular activities. The number of treatment sessions required will depend on the amount of fat present. Normally two to four sessions spaced eight weeks apart are necessary. The amount of Lipodissolve that can be safely administered determines the size of the area to be treated in a single session. Typical side effects of itching, burning and redness usually subside within hours. Bruising, swelling and sensitivity-to-touch may take five to seven days to resolve. Ideal candidates are healthy individuals between 18–75 years old who have fat deposits which are resistant to diet or exercise.
Lipodissolve does not replace traditional lipoplasty techniques, but it is an excellent adjunct or alternative for those patients seeking minimally invasive treatment of their fat deposits.
