Reference to varicose veins dates back thousands of years. They have been depicted in Egyptian Art and have been referred to in the Bible. Roman soldiers commonly wrapped their legs in leather bindings to treat the leg fatigue so often associated with varicose veins.
Treatment of these veins is often sought for symptoms of burning, throbbing, heaviness or cramping. However, even tiny spider veins can be symptomatic by causing the psychological distress of self-consciousness and embarrassment.
The 'gold standard' of treatment for leg veins is sclerotherapy. This process involves injections of a strong medication (scleroscent) into the vein through a tiny needle. The vein then scars shut and over a period of 2 to 6 weeks, disappears. The injections are virtually painless, and the results are excellent. There is no downtime, and the aftercare is simple: daily walking and use of a compression stocking for 3 to 10 days. The number of treatments required will of course depend on the extent of veins that need to be treated.
