Obagi Blue Peel
The Obagi Blue Peel is a chemically superior peel that achieves optimum skin resurfacing by using slow-acting TCA (trichloroacetic acid) to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new ones It restores tighter, smoother and younger-looking skin regardless of age, color or skin type and can be used on both facial area and non-facial areas (neck, chest, hands, back, arms and legs). The Blue Peel will have the greatest benefit on those who have blemish-prone skin, wrinkles, pigmentation problems and sun damage or general poor skin quality. It is especially good for treating Melasma as this condition can be worsened with laser treatments.
How it works
The Obagi Blue Peel safely and effectively rejuvenates the outermost layers of skin by delivering a controlled chemical acid to the epidermis or dermal-epidermal junction The chemical peel resurfaces fine lines and wrinkles, lightens unwanted pigment, tightens skin, and reduces pore size and laxity.
It involves applying from 2 to 4 coats of blue solution mixed with TCA (Trichloracetic Acid). The number of coats applied is determined by the depth of correction that is needed. These applications will lead to the removal of superficial to deeper damaged skin layers.
Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Salicylic Acid peels, the variable depth Blue Peel uses a slow-acting TCA (trichloroacetic acid) solution which ensures good control of peel depth. This can penetrate deeper and effect more correction of skin damage. It is considered a “medium depth” facial peel because it is stronger and goes deeper than the popular Glycolic Acid or Salicylic Acid Peels. Since TCA is not absorbed through the skin, there are no internal toxic effects.
Typical Treatment
Blue Peels take 30 to 40 minutes to perform. During the peel, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation which may last about 1 – 2 minutes. The sensation subsides as the peel self neutralizes. At the Randali Centre we use the Zimmer Chiller to make the peel much more tolerable.
Recovery
Recovery time is painless and last 5 to 8 days. Skin that’s been ‘Blue Peeled’ heals faster than skin that’s experienced traditional total skin resurfacing with laser or dermabrasion (wherein skin can take two weeks or more to heal and may stay red for three to six months). After Blue Peel, skin may exhibit a bluish tint and feel tight. Skin peeling begins at day 4 to 5 and lasts for 2 to 3 days. If more than one peel is required, they are spaced 6 weeks apart. Annual Blue Peels assist in the long-term maintenance of skin health and fitness.
Results
After complete healing, skin appears more translucent and is soft, smooth, dewy, and healthier.
